Playing the piano, especially in my jazz band in middle school and high school, has helped me express and learn how to use creativity in school and during tests. Especially as a pianist, improvisation is a huge part of playing in a jazz band whether I am soloing or just coming up with chords and melodies to accompany the rest of the band. When I first joined jazz band, I really struggled with coming up with things to play and finding my own sound, especially on stage. But after listening and learning from great jazz pianists and lots of practice, I was finally able to use the creativity necessary to be a successful jazz pianist to my advantage. This translated to my school life as I was able to utilize the skills and patterns I used to craft a jazz solo for piano in order to figure out patterns and solutions to unique problems during tests. This especially helped me in math and science classes. Learning to calmly and confidently perform on stage in front of people helped me express my creativity in stressful situations, which in turn helped me calm down during tests or when I couldn’t figure out something. I can use the skills I learned to quickly assess the situation in order to come up with the best solution for each circumstance. By playing jazz piano, I was able to find my creativity, making me more capable and confident, helping me navigate the challenges of school and especially during difficult exams. I am excited to take the skills I have gained throughout my middle and high school career and facilitate a new wave of creativity and unique problem solving capabilities at the School of Architecture at Texas A&M.
