Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.
Great test preparation starts when you begin learning the material to be tested. First, my strategy is to take excellent notes while listening to my instructor's lecture. I also often take notes when reading the materials provided as part of the lesson. After taking notes, I review them a day or two later and make sure to highlight and underline important points. Sometimes I review the definitions for some of the more difficult concepts. If there is a study guide for the test, I also make sure and get that from my instructor. This helps me know what my instructor plans on covering in the test. I have found that one of the most important parts of studying is creating a routine. This means that I plan to study at the same time each day and in the same place. That study place should also have good lighting, be comfortable, and free of distractions such as my phone. When I know that I have a test coming up, I know that I must plan my studying so that I am not cramming it all into the hours before the test. I have realized that in the days before a test, it is best to study an hour or two at a time each day. Next, a good night's sleep can do wonders for my attention and ability to stay focused. I try to get a solid night's sleep the night before the test so that I am alert during the test. While I am taking the test, I scan through the entire test first so that I can quickly see the questions that I know the answer to right away. I usually answer these questions first. I then go back to the questions that I have to think about more and read them over. With multiple choice questions, I eliminate the answers that I know are wrong and narrow it down to the correct answer. With essay-type answers, I begin writing the information that I know and this helps me remember more details. Then, I am able to go back through and revise my response. Overall I think that the key to great test preparation is in taking the necessary time required to retain the material.
