Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.

As one makes their way through education, testing is something that is inevitable. To address this, it is important for one to know their strengths and weaknesses. Even though this may be challenging, it is a necessity. I struggle with self- anxiety when taking a standardized test. After acknowledging this weakness in myself, I engaged in test preparation techniques that helped me succeed. These techniques include deep breathing exercises and taking multiple practice tests before the exam.

I recently moved back to the United States after living in Thailand for 2 years. I was a teacher in New Jersey, Thailand and recently moved to California to pursue a doctorate in International and Multicultural Education. After moving to California, I encountered some difficulties. Even though I had taught 4 years, California required additional tests for me to transfer my teaching license over from New Jersey. This flooded me with anxiety and frustration. Luckily, I know my weaknesses for standardized tests and immediately started prepping. I began practicing deep breathing exercises and ordered a Mometrix Test Preparation book. The CTEL Exam Practice Questions and coping techniques truly prepared me for the compacted exam. I practiced taking the Mometrix's exams, reviewed the explanation of answers and working on breathing. These items led me to pass my exam!

Overall, test taking is stressful! It is something that is challenging. With that being said, there are so many resources available to help one be successful. Mometrix and breathing exercises worked for me, and I hope they can work for you too. You got this!

Note: I am a first year doctoral student!
