Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.
The test preparation practices that work best for me are a mix of some modern technology and a little old school technique. The first thing I like to do is excercise, either taking a brisk walk, or running on the treadmill at the gym. I find this clears my head and gets me energized. I pick my study space, get comfy and get into my zone. I make sure I don’t have many distractions. I try to shut off my phone and turn off the t.v. I have also used the Self Control app to block certain websites for a specific amount of time. I also like to make flash cards with my notes from class using index cards. I know a lot of my classmates use Quizlet, but I find I like actually holding the cards and going at my own pace. This really gets my memory juices flowing. I prefer to read them aloud as this method helps me retain more information. I just make sure I’m alone and not in a public setting! After I review 20 or more note cards, I like reward myself. I always keep a stash of Twizzlers in my backpack. This treat keeps me keep motivated. If I’m studying a historical figure or event, I try to watch a documentary, too. Key details are easier for me to remember visually. Study groups can also be helpful, giving me more ideas and view points. I try teaching what I’ve learned in these groups. This helps me see if I have a grasp of key concepts. After an hour, I try to take a study break and get myself a Pink Drink from Starbucks. This helps me keep focused and on point. Lastly, I get plenty of sleep. I don’t try to stay up late and cram all the information. I get at least 8 hours.
These key study concepts have help me have a successful 4 years at Minooka Community High School. I have been able to successfully maintain at 3.7 G.P.A. I look forward to using these study habits at Iowa State University. I’ve been told repetition is the mother of skill...keep on practicing and you will win.
Knowledge is power and I look forward to learning more of it at college!!
