Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.

In order to earn high grades, I have learned that it is important to pace myself. I have a day-by-day calendar to schedule and set aside time each day to study for all of my classes. This is very helpful for me because I learn a little every day instead of cramming it in my head at the last minute. In addition, I review previously learned concepts to keep them fresh in my brain. This helps with retention of pertinent information and benefits me the most. Another strategy that I use when studying is to annotate the text while reading a book or my notes. This approach is useful in both my english and history classes. When reading a book or article for class, I take notes at the same time. This prevents me from having to read the material over and over. It also helps me to outline the key points in order to get the most from the text. Finally, I believe that it is important to see the “big picture” when learning new concepts. Aristotle once said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” It is much clearer when you break down the information into small bits and then explore how the parts fit together to make the whole. This approach is especially useful in both science and math. For example, when learning about a cell, it is helpful to analyze all of its parts in order to understand how the cell functions as a whole. This method is also very helpful when learning the steps to solve a difficult problem. By trying to imagine the bigger picture first, it becomes easier to start from the beginning and break it down into manageable parts.
We, as students, are all different and do not learn in the same way. Some people are visual learners while others may be auditory or kinesthetic learners. It took me many years to realize what works best for me. I would advise students who are having trouble learning to evaluate their own individual style. Use this information to come up with a plan, set goals, and go after their dreams.
