Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.
For much of my academic life, I had no need to explore studying options, but that changed in junior year. After tenth grade, I switched from an average public school to a STEM magnet school. Having studied only a handful of times, I was ill prepared for the new academic challenges of the enhanced curriculum. Living and learning at a STEM school has taught me that studying is a science of its own, so it’s important to treat it like one. Therefore, I have amassed knowledge about how to study scientifically. My personal favorite scientifically valid study tactic is the Leitner System. In the Leitner System, flashcards are used to study material, but lesser known topics are studied with greater frequency. For example, when I was learning the polyatomic ions, I used the Leitner System. Every flashcard starts in the same stack. If I answered correctly, that card moves to the next stack. If I answered incorrectly, the cards stays in the first stack. This process repeats until all cards have been in each stack – I typically use four or five stacks. The Leitner System is just one example of studying with science behind you, and it has assisted me in learning Chemistry, Spanish, and English.
