Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.

Studying can be stressful, whether it is for a quiz, exam, or licensure exam. As a hands on learner, I have struggled to find a good study method that keeps me focused. Throughout school, I have utilized several studying techniques. The most helpful for me have been flashcards and online resources. Online resources can be fun, easy, thorough, and individualized. Everyone learns in different ways, and it is important to find out what works best for you. For me, it took years to really find things that work. There are several apps that I have used to study. Adaptive quizzing has also helped.
YouTube videos are available for most topics. I have been able to watch demonstrations on nursing skills such as: vital sign assessments, lab work, medication administration and many more related to my field. As a new nurse, I still have questions about my scope of practice and the right way to do things. My scope is available online, but videos make it easier to retain the steps and protocols. As we use certain skills regularly, others are used less frequent and tend to be forgotten. Online resources make it easier, and safer to refresh skills. Sometimes lists and sequences are required to memorize. When you are taking multiple courses it can be hard to focus on memorizing for one subject. I have found that creating my own rhymes and songs helps me keep it fun, while retaining the information.
Balancing life and school can be quite intense. Most people don't know what kind of learner they are, so they don't really know which study methods work best for them. Instructors often recommend the usual: highlighting, study groups, flashcards, etc. For some people, those work perfect! Some students can highlight a section, read it carefully and retain it easily. However, that is not the case for me. It took several failed attempts, several tears, and some thorough searches to find methods that work best for me. However, studying is much easier now that I have found my own way to do so.
