Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.

I always hated taking tests. As someone who has battled anxiety throughout the recent years of my life, tests always seemed to bring out the worst side of me. I think there are some misconceptions about anxiety. It doesn’t just rush and take over my body as soon as the test hits my desk. It starts 3 weeks before the test when the teacher first mentions it. It is something that continually lingers every day until the second I turn the paper in. However, I have learned to use this to my advantage and find techniques to both reduce my anxiety and learn the material.
How exactly I study depends on the class, but the first thing I always do when I find out that I have a test coming up is write it down. Whether it is in a month, a week, or in just a few days, this helps me know that I have access to the date, and I can begin to form a plan of attack. The second thing I do actually happens every day. I go into my notes and make a list of everything I am going to accomplish. After detailing everything that needs to be done, whether that includes work, baseball practice, or just meeting with teachers after school, I take a step back and decide when is the best time for me to begin studying. This process helps reduce my anxiety, and gives me a sense of accomplishment when I lie down to go to bed at night. Whether it is math, english, science, etc, I always plan ahead and try to leave myself more than enough time to prepare. I know it may not be for everyone, but it works great for me.
The plan is to bring this strategy to my next stop at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS. I am sure my future roommate and newfound friends will make fun of me for being the guy that stresses about tests and studies days in advance rather than blowing it off, going and partying, and then pulling an all nighter the day before. The classic college lifestyle. Oh well. If being the guy who studies for days in advance gets me made fun of, so be it. It sure is a good thing I have thick skin.
