Exam Outline
The GACE Middle Grades Language Arts (4-8) exam is made of three testlets, which you can take individually in different sessions or all at once in one session. The total combined time limit is 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the total number of questions is 100.
Reading and Analysis of Texts
(Testlet 108)
There are 40 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- Reading fluency and its effect on reading comprehension
- Syntactic rules, word structure, and contextual analysis
- Factors that influence vocabulary development
- Effective reading and written language strategies to enhance reading comprehension
- General academic and cross-curricular content-specific vocabulary in context
- Organizational structures and text features
- Interpreting graphic features used in texts
- Evaluating the relevance, importance, and sufficiency of supporting evidence, examples, and reasons
- Facts vs. opinions
- Characteristics of various literary genres
- The use and impact of structural elements in fiction, drama, and poetry
- Determining the themes of literary texts
Writing, Research, and Multimedia Texts
(Testlet 109)
There are 35 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 45 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- The writing process
- Selecting and maintaining style, voice, tone, and diction
- Anticipating and responding to potential questions, concerns, and counterarguments in texts
- Establishing a clear centra idea
- Using effective and varied transitions to create cohesion
- Developing, sequencing, and pacing experiences and events to create a coherent narrative
- Using dialogue, details, sensory language, and reflection to develop narrative writing
- Developing research questions
- Locating sources of relevant information
- Accurately paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting directly from sources
- Analyzing various messages, meanings, perceptions, and themes conveyed through media
- Establishing a clear purpose
- Incorporating various media into presentations
Language, Speaking, and Listening
(Testlet 110)
There are 25 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 30 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- Language acquisition theories and strategies
- Adolescent language and literacy development
- Factors that affect oral language and interpersonal communication development
- Planning, initiating, facilitation, and participating in collaborative discussions
- Effective participation in academic discussions
- The relationships across students’ linguistic skill sets
- Incorporating effective language styles, rhetorical devices, and vocal techniques into oral presentations

Registration
To register for the GACE Middle Grades Language Arts (4-8) exam, you need to create a MyPSC account. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll receive your Georgia certification ID number and be able to submit a request for testing eligibility.
Once you have been approved for the exam, you can register to take the test by creating an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account.
Fees
You can register to take the testlets individually ($28.50) or combined ($84.50). Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.
Test Day
On test day, you should arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes before your scheduled exam, which will give you enough time to complete the check-in process. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.
You will then be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing room.
Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.
How the Exam is Scored
When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.
You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.
Passing Score
Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE Middle Grades Language Arts exam, the passing score is 220.
