Take a look at these examples to see how to convert percentages to decimals and fractions, as well as how to convert decimals and fractions to percentages.

Converting a Percentage to a Decimal

💡 Convert 65% to a decimal.

The word percent means “per one hundred,” so 65% is just another way of saying “65 out of 100.”

To convert this percentage to a decimal, we need to divide it by 100. An easy way to do this is to move the decimal point two places to the left.

A decimal being moved two places to the left in the number 65

This gives us our final answer: 0.65!

Converting a Decimal to a Percentage

💡 Convert 0.25 to a percentage.

To convert this decimal to a percentage, we need to multiply it by 100. An easy way to do this is to move the decimal point two places to the right.

A decimal being moved two places to the right in the number 0.25

This gives us our final answer: 25%!

Converting a Percentage to a Fraction

💡 Convert 40% to a fraction.

Since percent means “per one hundred,” we can write the percentage as a fraction with a denominator of 100.

\(40\% = \dfrac{40}{100}\)

Though this is a correct answer, this fraction isn’t in its simplest form. To simplify it, we need to find the largest number that divides into both 40 and 100. In this case, that number is 20.

Now, we need to divide the numerator and denominator by 20.

\(\dfrac{40 \div 20}{100 \div 20} = \dfrac{2}{5}\)

This gives us our final simplified answer: \(\dfrac{2}{5}\) !

Converting a Fraction to a Percentage

💡 Convert \(\frac{3}{4}\) to a percentage.

To convert this fraction, we need to turn it into a decimal first. We can do this by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

\(3 \div 4 = 0.75\)

To change this to a percentage, all you have to do is multiply it by 100 (or move the decimal two places to the right).

\(0.75 \times 100 = 75\)

This gives us our final answer: 75%!
