GACE Spanish Exam Outline

The GACE Spanish exam is made of four testlets, which you can take individually in different sessions or all at once in one session. The total combined time limit is 3 hours, and the total number of questions is 77.

Interpretive Listening—Spanish

(Testlet 335)

There are 20 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 30 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Determine the main idea or overall purpose of a spoken text.
  • Identify key contextual details that reflect cultural norms, practices, and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Select an appropriate reply to a spoken prompt, question, or comment.
  • Extract information and draw logical inferences based on evidence presented in a spoken text.
  • Analyze the social or cultural context of a spoken exchange, including speaker relationships and intended audience.
  • Evaluate a speaker’s viewpoint, tone, attitude, or perspective within a spoken message.
  • Examine how language structures and idiomatic expressions are used to create specific meaning or effects in spoken communication.

Interpretive Reading—Spanish

There are 30 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Analyze a literary, informational, or argumentative text to determine its central idea, theme, or primary purpose.
  • Identify key supporting details that clarify meaning or contribute to the development of ideas in a written text.
  • Examine contextual details that reflect cultural products, practices, and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Analyze the social and cultural context of a text to understand an author’s or character’s point of view or perspective.
  • Evaluate how an author develops tone, mood, or attitude through language choices and stylistic features.
  • Interpret idiomatic expressions and other figurative language within a culturally authentic text.
  • Demonstrate understanding of academic and content-specific vocabulary used in Spanish informational texts.
  • Assess the strength and reliability of evidence presented to support an argument in a written text.
  • Identify the intended audience and communicative purpose of an argumentative text.

Language Acquisition and Instruction

There are 25 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 45 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Demonstrate understanding of major theories, principles, and processes involved in language acquisition and language learning.
  • Recognize similarities and differences between acquiring a language and learning a language through formal study.
  • Apply knowledge of linguistic, cognitive, affective, and social factors that influence language acquisition.
  • Create linguistically and culturally rich learning environments using age-appropriate, standards-aligned instructional materials.
  • Design and differentiate standards-aligned instruction that enables students to use Spanish in meaningful, authentic contexts.
  • Use instructional strategies that help students compare Spanish language and culture with their own languages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Implement instructional methods that foster active participation in a Spanish-speaking community.
  • Develop and administer ongoing authentic performance assessments that measure learner progress.
  • Interpret and use assessment data to refine instruction and support student growth.

Presentational Speaking and Writing—Spanish

There are 2 constructed-response assignments in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 45 minutes. The two assignments are as follows:

  1. Deliver a coherent and well-developed spoken message in Spanish.
  2. Develop a written composition in Spanish that effectively communicates a message.

Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you need to use your MyPSC account. If you do not have an account, create your account to receive your Georgia certification number. After you register for the Spanish exam on MyPSC, create an ETS GACE testing account. Your ETS account lists the test(s) you are approved to take. You will register for the exam through your ETS GACE testing account.

Fees

You can register to take the subtests individually ($40-$49) or combined ($169). Your test fee includes a $25 registration fee and a $28 test center fee. Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes before your scheduled exam on test day to allow time for the check-in process. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.

You will then be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing room.

Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.

How the Exam is Scored

When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.

You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.

Passing Score

Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE Spanish exam, the passing score is 220.
