Exam Outline
The GACE Middle Grades Math (4-8) exam is made of three testlets, which you can take individually in different sessions or all at once in one session. The total combined time limit is 3.5 hours, and the total number of questions is 100.
Number Sense, Number Operations, Statistics, and Probability
(Testlet 101)
There are 40 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1.5 hours. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- The relationships between the subsets of real numbers
- The role of place value in mathematical reasoning
- Using estimation
- Number theory concepts
- Relational and operational properties
- Conventional and alternative algorithms
- Integers, fractions, decimals, percents, rates, ratios, and proportions
- Classification of questions as statistical or nonstatistical
- Classification of questions as categorical or numerical
- Effects of bias and sampling techniques
- Organizing and displaying quantitative and qualitative data using appropriate formats
- Probabilities of simple events
- Using measures of central tendency and spread
- Methods for simulating probabilities
Algebra and Functions
(Testlet 102)
There are 30 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- Analysis of a variety of patterns
- The properties of relations and functions in and across multiple representations
- Direct and inverse proportional relationships
- Algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities
- Linear and nonlinear equations and inequalities
- Connecting appropriate algebraic notation to phrases and sentences
- Interpreting the meaning of the slope and \(y\)-intercept in various contexts
- Modeling real-world problems with linear and nonlinear equations, systems, and inequalities
Measurement and Geometry
(Testlet 103)
There are 30 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:
- Using various units and unit conversions within the customary and metric systems
- Calculating and estimating measures
- The concepts of similarity, scale factors, and proportional reasoning
- Analyzing precision, accuracy, and rounding in measurements and computed quantities
- Properties and relationships of points, lines, segments, planes, edges, vertices, and angles
- Properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons
- Principles of similarity and congruence
- Using nets and cross sections to analyze 3D figures
- Analyzing 2D and 3D figures using coordinate systems
- Connecting algebra and geometry by using distance, midpoint, and slope to classify figures and solve coordinate plane problems
- Analyzing figures in terms of symmetry

Exam Registration
To register for the GACE Middle Grades Math (4–8) exam, you need to create a MyPSC account. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll receive your Georgia certification ID number and be able to submit a request for testing eligibility.
Once you have been approved for the exam, you can register to take the test by creating an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account.
Fees
You can register to take the testlets individually ($28.50) or combined ($84.50). Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.
Test Day
On testing day, you should report to the testing center 15-30 minutes before your scheduled exam. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.
During the check-in process, you will be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, wallet, keys, bags, accessories etc.) in a secure locker outside the testing room.
Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.
How the Exam is Scored
When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.
You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.
Passing Score
Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE Middle Grades Math exam, the passing score is 220.
