Understanding How the GRE is Scored

The GRE exam is scored a little different than other exams you have taken in the past.

When you receive your GRE scores, you’ll see that there are three reported scores:

  • A Verbal Reasoning score that is reported on a scale of 130 to 170 in 1-point increments.
  • A Quantitative Reasoning score is reported on a scale of 130 to 170, also in 1-point increments.
  • An Analytical Writing score that is reported on a scale of 0 to 6 in half-point increments.

Your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores are based on the number of questions that you answered correctly. The number of answers that you received correctly is called a raw score, which is converted into a scaled score.

The Analytical Writing section is more straight forward. You will receive a score that ranges from 0 to 6, with 6 being the best.
