The NYS Regents Examination, offered by the New York State Board of Regents, is a set of assessments for students of all ages throughout the state. These exams are developed by the New York State Education Department. The Regents Exams fulfill a number of purposes. They provide an accurate reflection of student knowledge and progress in key subject areas, and they help teachers personalize subsequent instruction. They also generate data about school and district performance, so that administrators can identify areas in need of improvement.

At the high school level, there are two English language arts exams: comprehensive English and high school English language arts (Common Core). There are foreign language exams for French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. The subject areas covered by the mathematics exams are algebra I, integrated algebra, geometry, algebra 2/trigonometry, and mathematics B. There are only two social studies exams at the high school level: global history and geography and United States history and government. Finally, the Regents Examination program includes five high school science tests: reference tables, chemistry, Earth science, living environment, and physics.

The NYS Regents exams typically take about three hours, and are divided into two parts. The first part consists of thirty to fifty multiple-choice questions, while the second is long answer/essay questions. For the math and physical science exams, Part II is made up of multi-part questions that require the student to show his or her work.
