Write an essay where you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to become a teacher.
I went to college right out of high school already knowing my major would be Elementary Education. I took introduction to Teaching that first semester, did my 20 hours of student teaching, and this class instilled this was the career for me.
I had to put my college career on hold my junior year, got married and had kids. I continued to always work with kids, even once I was a mom myself. I worked at Parent's Day Outs and my kids could attend the same school. I became a lead teacher in my first few months doing this, I love the curriculum planning, inspiring creativity, and making learning fun! I quit to homeschool my son for first and second grade, this is when my daughter's special needs were becoming more apparent and the geneticist recommended her going to school to try to "play catch up" and learn from other kids since she was so delayed.
I went back to teaching at a PDO and worked there for another 5 years. Once both my kids were in school, I got a job being the Reading Interventionist at my daughter's school, I loved working with kids in all the different grades everyday. My love for teaching the special needs kids who needed a little extra help, someone to believe in them, grew more doing this job. I then got offered a position being a SPED educational assistant and have been doing that the last two years. Being in the classroom everyday, working with and seeing the lightbulbs go off when a child figures out something they were confused on, and just watching the kids grow in confidence, really pushed me to go back to school and finish my degree. This has been a career dream of mine for over 30 years, now after not attending college for close to 20 years, I am returning to finally finish!
