Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

Every decision I’ve made starting at thirteen years old has been a conscious effort to understand the world past the poverty-stricken, gang-riddled neighborhoods in which I grew up. I received a full scholarship to a private boarding school in Connecticut at fourteen to obtain a better education. I studied abroad in Italy and traveled all over Europe during a semester abroad in college under a diversity fellowship. I’ve done Title IX research on minorities and sexual assault on college campuses, as well as worked with patients and families in hospice care. My life’s journey has been about emerging and learning about different classes, races, and cultures. As I continue to pursue education, diversifying my experiences and learning, is at the forefront of my goals. I believe it would be difficult to help any person or community if I had no basis of understanding of their worldview. I hope that by cultivating a better understanding of the world past the narrow landscape, I grew up in, that I can better help my patients and my community.

As I continue my education at the Doctorate level, I hope to combine my diverse and unique experiences to give back to my community. However, this impact will lessen as the amount of student loan debt I have incurred and will continue to incur is stifling. I will not be able to better serve the community as I will struggle to repay my student loans. Any debt relief is not only an investment in me but an investment in the communities that I will be better able to serve. I believe through my leadership skills and different cultural experiences that I could bring a unique perspective to the communities I serve. Regardless of the adversity I have and will face, I will continue as I have before, to make a conscious effort to understand the world, society and the human mind past my personal experiences with the hope that I will be able to make the world a better place at least minutely.
