My top most effective test preparation technique is previous-form preparation. In this technique, the student takes practice tests of earlier versions of the exam. I have found practice exams to be very beneficial throughout my educational journey. Practice exams can help the student become familiar with the nature of the test along with the way the questions are presented. When I earned my CNA license in 2019, I took online practice exams which were very similar to the actual test. This eased my test-taking anxieties because I was familiar with the format of the test. This made it much less intimidating and I was able to focus on the material of the concepts.
My second test-preparation technique is same-format practice. For me personally, it is helpful to practice questions which are formatted exactly like the actual exam. I am a student who has intense test-taking anxiety. This technique helps me become very familiar with the exam. At times, most anxiety stems from the fear of the unfamiliar. When we know what to expect, we can help ourselves ease our anxiety. If the exam I am preparing for is timed, I like to set an alarm on my phone to time myself. It can be beneficial to do this several times to get used to the feeling of pressure. This practice of timing myself helped me prepare for the ACT exam as it is a timed test. These techniques work for me and my style of learning!
