You aren’t alone in these feelings. In fact, there was a renowned physicist who struggled with the same exact problems. Here’s how he fixed them.

Using the Feynman Technique

Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, developed a method to learn and internalize topics through teaching. This technique, known as the Feynman technique, is a systematic method of understanding, simplifying, and explaining complex concepts.

The goal of the technique is to take something hard to understand, clarify it, and then explain it as if you were talking to a child.

There are four steps in the Feynman technique:

Step 1: Study a topic.

The first step is to identify what topic or concept you want to learn about. Write the subject on the top of a piece of paper. Then, write everything you know or have learned about the topic on your paper. You can use bullet points, an outline, or any method that works best for you. It is essential to keep the points simple; you do not have to write an essay.

Step 2: Teach it to a child.

Once you’ve exhausted your knowledge, pretend you’re teaching and explaining the topic to a child or someone who doesn’t know the subject. Your goal here is to explain the topic in your own words, using examples that apply your understanding.

It is important to keep your discussion simple, defining the concept with examples and analogies. Keep the information brief and avoid technical jargon.

Step 3: Evaluate your teaching.

Now is the time to reflect honestly on how well you were able to explain your topic.

Were there areas that you had difficulty explaining? Did you find yourself referring back to your notes to refresh your memory? What about technical terminology? Did you use language that required an understanding of more technical concepts?

Use your evaluation of your teaching to identify your knowledge gaps and determine which ideas are too complex.

Step 4: Reorganize and simplify.

Rewrite your explanation in simpler terms, reorganize your thoughts for flow, finish incomplete thoughts, and find simple examples to break down complex ideas. It may take a few rewrites to simplify your subject matter, but it is essential to ensure that you clearly understand the topic and that your audience does as well.

It may seem counterintuitive to “dumb down” your information, but understanding starts with simplicity. Technical language, assuming someone has a baseline of knowledge and not breaking information into knowledge grabs, stands in the way of understanding a topic. If you can teach someone a confusing or complex topic, you will boost your confidence, encouraging you to continue learning.

Feynman Technique Example

Let’s say you’re studying photosynthesis for a biology test. You could start by writing the topic at the top of your paper and then writing what you know in simple words:

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is how plants make food. Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make sugar. They also release oxygen.

That’s a good start, but it is still a little too broad. If you were teaching this to a child, you might say:

“A plant is like a tiny food factory. It takes in sunlight through its leaves, water through its roots, and carbon dioxide from the air. Then it uses those ingredients to make sugar, which gives the plant energy to grow. Oxygen is released as a leftover product.”

Now, evaluate your explanation. Can you explain why sunlight is needed? Do you know where the water comes from? Can you explain what carbon dioxide is? Do you know what chlorophyll does?

If you can’t explain one of those parts clearly, you’ve found a knowledge gap. For example, maybe you realize you wrote “sunlight helps the plant make sugar,” but you don’t actually know how sunlight is involved. That tells you exactly what to review next.

After studying that weak spot, you might rewrite your explanation like this:

Photosynthesis

Plants have a green substance in their leaves called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps the plant capture energy from sunlight. The plant uses that energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. The sugar feeds the plant, and oxygen is released into the air.

That is the Feynman Technique in action. You start with what you know, explain it simply, find the parts you can’t explain, and then study those parts until your explanation is clearer.

Why Does the Feynman Technique Work?

The Feynman Technique works because it makes studying active.

It is easy to read a chapter, highlight a few sentences, and feel like you understand the material. But recognizing information is not the same thing as being able to explain it.

When you use the Feynman Technique, you have to pull the idea from memory and put it into your own words. That is a form of retrieval practice. Research on test-enhanced learning has found that practicing recall can improve long-term retention more than repeated studying alone 1.

The technique also uses self-explanation. Instead of copying a definition, you have to explain what the idea means, why it matters, and how it works. A review of study strategies found that self-explanation can be a useful learning method, especially when students are trying to understand new material instead of simply memorize it 2.

This is why the “teach it to a child” part is so helpful. You cannot hide behind complicated words when you are explaining something simply. If your explanation is confusing, incomplete, or full of terms you cannot define, you have found the part you need to study again.

The Feynman Technique also pushes you to ask better questions. Instead of only asking, “What is this?” you start asking, “Why is this true?” and “How would I explain this to someone else?” Research on elaborative interrogation shows that asking why a fact makes sense can help students learn and remember information more effectively 3.

Finally, the technique works because teaching is one of the best ways to check your understanding. Studies on learning by teaching suggest that explaining material to someone else can help learners organize information and notice gaps in what they know 4.

That does not mean the Feynman Technique is magic. It works best when you are honest about what you do not understand. If you get stuck, go back to your notes, study the weak spot, and then try explaining it again in simpler language.

The goal is not to sound smart. The goal is to make the idea clear.

When Should You Use the Feynman Technique?

The Feynman Technique is most useful when you need to understand a concept, process, formula, or idea well enough to explain it without relying on your notes. It works well for subjects like science, history, math concepts, grammar rules, nursing procedures, and missed practice-test questions.

It’s not always the best choice for simple memorization, like learning a list of dates, vocabulary words, or formulas by themselves. For those, flashcards and practice questions may be faster. Use the Feynman Technique when you need to figure out whether you really understand something, not just whether you recognize it.

Help from Around the Internet

Want to see the Feynman Technique explained another way? These resources can help you review the idea from a few different angles.

Book: How to Become A Straight-A Student
This author interviewed high performers from over 100 colleges and wrote about what he learned.

      App: Forest
A fun way to stay off your phone.

Video: Three Websites Every Student Should Know About
Write better, organize more, and calculate your grades easily.

Sources

Test-enhanced learning and long-term retention study

Review of effective student learning techniques

Elaborative interrogation and fact learning study

Learning by teaching and teaching expectancy study

Do you ever find yourself hunched over your desk, staring at pages of highlighted text, hoping that the information will magically imprint itself into your brain?
