{"id":6662,"date":"2020-02-28T19:28:11","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T19:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/blog\/?p=6662"},"modified":"2022-07-29T16:54:48","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T16:54:48","slug":"remembering-the-greater-than-sign-less-than-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/blog\/remembering-the-greater-than-sign-less-than-sign\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering the Greater Than Sign &#038; Less Than Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you remember learning in school about the little sideways signs that look like little arrowheads:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\">&lt; &gt;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lot of us know that these signs mean \u201cgreater than\u201d and \u201cless than\u201d, but can\u2019t seem to remember which sign is which.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But first, what do these signs mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These signs are used when math problems don\u2019t have a clear answer, which are also called inequalities. Inequalities compare two things, showing the relationship between them. The word \u201cinequality\u201d means that two things are not equal.<\/p>\n<p>The two signs &lt; and\u00a0 &gt; are signs that are used when you\u2019re comparing two things in math. With math, you usually have to solve the problem, but when using the greater than and less than signs, you\u2019re showing if a number is greater than or less than another number rather than actually solving a problem.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Greater-Than-Less-Than-Signs.jpg\" alt=\"Greater Than Less Than Signs\" width=\"614\" height=\"794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Greater-Than-Less-Than-Signs.jpg 614w, https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Greater-Than-Less-Than-Signs-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Which sign is which?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The &gt; symbol means \u201cgreater than\u201d. It shows that one number or value is larger than another number. For example: 5 &gt; 2<\/p>\n<p>If you see the symbol &lt; it means that one number is smaller than the other number. The alligator will always want to eat a larger number of fish. Whichever number is larger, the alligator mouth is opened towards that number.<\/p>\n<p>If you were given 5 and 8 and were told to show which number is greater than or less than, the alligator would open his mouth towards the 8. The \u201cless than\u201d sign also looks like an L and the greater than sign &gt; does not.
