They inform your audience of the focus of your paper or speech. Imagine that you go to introduce yourself to someone, and they ask you \u201chow would you describe yourself in five sentences?\u201d and you responded to them and said \u201cI like red. I have a cat. My name is Bobby Slim. I have parents. I sleep in a bed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There is nothing particularly interesting about how you\u2019ve described yourself. Except maybe the fact that your name is Bobby Slim, that\u2019s pretty crazy\u2026 But outside of that, you haven\u2019t really said anything that captivates their attention&#8230;  Unless you are introducing yourself to your neighborhood crazy cat lady. But outside of her&#8230;sorry. You also haven\u2019t given them a general idea of what you are about.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the point is, if you start your introduction off with boring and irrelevant details (irrelevant means that it\u2019s not connected to your point at all), people aren\u2019t going to be interested in what you have to say. That is why learning how to write an effective introduction is so important.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Crafting_a_Compelling_Introduction\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Crafting a Compelling Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>\nSo, first things first, what is the purpose of an introduction?<\/p>\n<p>An introduction serves three main purposes: It engages your audience, it gives context for your arguments, and it presents a <a class=\"ylist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/academy\/thesis-statements\/\">thesis statement<\/a> (which is basically the point your going to prove).<\/p>\n<p>So, the first purpose, engaging your audience. This is often referred to as an attention grabber. There are several different ways to grab the attention of your audience, and I\u2019ll talk about a few different examples to help give you some ideas.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Startling_Information\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Startling Information<\/h3>\n<p>\nWhen you use startling information you need to make sure that this information is factual and verifiable. It doesn\u2019t have to be some piece of evidence that your audience has never heard of. It may just be a relevant fact that illustrates a point you wish to make. It may also be helpful to follow your piece of startling information with a sentence of elaboration.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say that I am writing a paper on the importance of clean drinking water; here is an example of startling evidence I might use: \u201cEvery minute a newborn baby dies from infection caused by lack of safe water and an unclean environment.\u201d My follow-up sentence to help elaborate might be \u201cWe could help significantly lower that number and save the lives of millions of children through sponsoring water purification research programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Anecdote\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Anecdote<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe next type of attention grabber we\u2019ll discuss is an anecdote. An anecdote is a brief and funny or intriguing story about a real person or event. You want to make sure that, if you choose to use an anecdote, it is short, sweet, and to the point. And by sweet I mean relevant.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Summary_Information\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Summary Information<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe last method to grab the attention of your audience, that we\u2019ll discuss, is a <a class=\"ylist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/academy\/summarizing-text\/\">summary of information<\/a>. This is exactly what it sounds like. You summarize your topic as you gradually ease the reader into your thesis statement. <\/p>\n<p>After your attention grabber, if it is only one or two sentences, you may need to follow it with one or two more sentences that guide your reader smoothly into your thesis. Don\u2019t think of this as fillage. You don\u2019t just want to desperately write a sentence just so that your paragraph isn\u2019t too short. You want these few sentences to be relevant, and helpful.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Thesis_Statement\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Thesis Statement<\/h3>\n<p>\nNow, onto the thesis statement. The thesis statement contains the focus of your essay, and it informs your reader what it\u2019s about. This is generally done in one to two sentences. Your thesis can technically go anywhere in your paragraph, it is your preference.<\/p>\n<p>There are certainly good essays where the thesis is at the end. You can really only get away with this if 1) your readers are actively thinking through what you are trying to say in your paper, and 2) you have faith that your writing is so good and so clear, that you are able to withhold your thesis until the very, very end of your essay; and your readers were able to follow the whole time. However, withholding your thesis until the very end of your paper is not a great idea for newer writers.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, you now understand the purpose and structure of an introduction. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Introduction_Example\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Introduction Example<\/h2>\n<p>\nCheck out this example of an introduction:<\/p>\n<div class=\"transcriptcallout\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Think with me for a moment. Right now, if you were feeling a bit thirsty and wanted a drink, what would you do? Well, you would go get a drink of water. Now, think about this: 844 million people don\u2019t have access to clean water. That is more people than live in North and South America, Australia, Canada, Mongolia, Ireland, and Botswana combined!  Every minute a newborn dies from an infection caused by lack of safe water and an unclean environment. Think about how radically different that is from anything you have experienced. Just as easily as we are able to quench our thirst, we could help significantly lower that number and save the lives of millions of children through sponsoring water purification research programs. Now, think about how little you care. Volunteerism in the U.S. has gone down by 3.9% from 2002-2015, and is continuing to decline. There are multiplying signs that something has gone horribly wrong with the Americans\u2019 sense of morality, and this not only affects the people around you, but people in different parts of the world.<\/div>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI hope that this video was helpful.
