You don&#8217;t need to wait until you have reviewed every topic. Guessing correctly does not necessarily mean that you have mastered the skill.<\/p>\n<p>For each difficult question, determine which of the following caused the problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You did not understand the concept or rule being tested.<\/li>\n<li>You misread the passage, graph, table, or question.<\/li>\n<li>You selected an answer that sounded reasonable but was not fully supported.<\/li>\n<li>You relied on how a sentence sounded instead of applying a grammar rule.<\/li>\n<li>You made a calculation or algebra error.<\/li>\n<li>You used the calculator inefficiently or entered something incorrectly.<\/li>\n<li>You spent too much time trying to determine the answer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then, outline a specific plan for improvement based on what you discovered. In other words, don&#8217;t just say, \u201cI need to study reading more.\u201d Specify that you need to practice identifying the function of an underlined sentence, distinguishing claims from supporting evidence, or choosing transitions that correctly express contrast.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, replace \u201cpractice math\u201d with a precise goal such as solving systems of equations, interpreting exponential functions, or converting units in word problems.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Utilize_Answer_Explanations\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Utilize Answer Explanations<\/h3>\n<p>Answer explanations are an underutilized studying resource. To take full advantage of them, read the explanation for every question you found difficult, including questions you answered correctly.<\/p>\n<p>For each one, make sure you can confidently explain:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Why the correct answer is correct<\/li>\n<li>Why each incorrect option is wrong<\/li>\n<li>What rule, concept, or skill is being tested<\/li>\n<li>How the same skill might appear in a different question<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For Reading and Writing questions, identify the exact word, sentence, or piece of data that supports the answer. Do not accept an answer merely because it seems logical or sounds more polished.<\/p>\n<p>For Math questions, solve the problem again without copying the explanation. Check whether you can complete it manually and with the available calculator, then decide which method would be more efficient under timed conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Study_Concepts,_Not_Individual_Questions\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Study Concepts, Not Individual Questions<\/h3>\n<p>Memorizing the answer to a PSAT practice question will not prepare you for a new question testing the same skill with a different passage, equation, graph, or set of numbers. Your goal should be to recognize and apply the underlying skill to any question that asks you to use it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, don&#8217;t memorize which transition completed one particular passage. Learn how transitions express relationships such as contrast, continuation, cause and effect, sequence, and examples.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, don&#8217;t memorize the steps used to solve one quadratic equation. Make sure you can recognize and solve quadratic equations presented in different forms, including equations, graphs, tables, and word problems.<\/p>\n<p>The exact questions on your test will be different from the ones you encounter during practice. If you can explain a skill without looking at your notes and then apply it correctly to a new question, that is a good indication that you have mastered it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pt-page\"><span id=\"Top_5_Most_Challenging_PSAT_Questions\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Top 5 Most Challenging PSAT Questions<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you know how to approach practice tests, try your hand at some targeted practice on your own!<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, we&#8217;ve compiled the data from about 16,000 test-takers who tried their hand at the practice test at the top of this page. According to the data, around 85% of people answered these five questions incorrectly.<\/p>\n<p>Answer each question and read through the answer explanation, whether you got the answer right or wrong.
