Remembering thousands of drug names and what they do is an enormous task, so I&#8217;m hoping this video will help you in your study of pharmacology. <\/p>\n<p>First, we&#8217;ll take a look at some blood pressure medications. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"ACE_Inhibitor_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>ACE Inhibitor Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\n<a class=\"ylist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/academy\/antihypertensives-ace-inhibitors-and-arbs\/\">ACE inhibitors<\/a> end in <em>-pril<\/em>, such as captopril and lisinopril. ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, thus reducing the heart&#8217;s workload. Beta-blockers end in <em>-lol<\/em>, such as atenolol, propranolol, and labetalol.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"BetaBlocker_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Beta-Blocker Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nBeta-blockers reduce blood pressure by slowing the heart rate and reducing myocardial contractility. They are given for hypertension, CHF, and chronic heart failure. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Calcium_Channel_Blocker_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Calcium Channel Blocker Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nDrugs ending in <em>-dipine<\/em> are calcium channel blockers, such as amlodipine and nifedipine. Calcium channel blockers relax blood vessels, therefore increasing blood supply and oxygen to the heart, reducing the heart&#8217;s workload and lowering blood pressure.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"ARB_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>ARB Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nAngiotensin-II receptor antagonists\/blockers (ARBs) end in <em>-sartan<\/em>, such as losartan and valsartan. ARBs inhibit blood vessel constriction, helping blood vessels relax, which lowers blood pressure. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Diuretic_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Diuretic Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nDiuretics are often used in conjunction with blood pressure medication. <\/p>\n<h3>Potassium-Sparing Diuretics<\/h2>\n<p>\nDrugs ending and <em>-actone<\/em> are potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone (also known as aldactone). These diuretics increase the fluid passed out by the kidneys while retaining potassium in the body (considered a weak diuretic).<\/p>\n<h3>Thiazide Diuretics<\/h2>\n<p>\nThiazide diuretics end in <em>-thiozide<\/em> and are used mainly for treating high blood pressure and edema, but potassium is lost in the process. Hydrochlorothiazide, or HCTZ, is commonly used. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Hypotension_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Hypotension Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nLet&#8217;s look at another group of drugs that cause hypotension, or low blood pressure, as a side effect but with other intended purposes. Drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction end in <em>-afil<\/em> and include sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis). These medications cause direct coronary vasodilation, and special precautions should be taken in men with cardiovascular disease. <\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go over a few more cardiovascular drugs. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Statin_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Statin Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nStatins\/antilipidemic drugs end with, you guessed it, <em>-statin<\/em>, including atorvastatin (Lipitor) and simvastatin (Zocor). These are anti-cholesterol drugs that reduce LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Thrombolytic_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Thrombolytic Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nThrombolytic drugs end with <em>-ace<\/em>, such as streptokinase or alteplase, which is also known as tPA (tissue plasminogen activator). These are clot-buster drugs given to break down unwanted blood clots causing heart attacks and <a class=\"ylist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mometrix.com\/academy\/strokes\/\">strokes<\/a>. The sooner treatment is given, the quicker blood flow is restored to the area.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Anticoagulant_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Anticoagulant Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nIf the medication ends with <em>-arin<\/em>, it&#8217;s most likely an anticoagulant, such as heparin or warfarin. Anticoagulants prevent blood coagulation or prolong the clotting time. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Antibiotic_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Antibiotic Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nNow, let&#8217;s take a look at some antibiotics. <\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>tetracyclines<\/strong>, which have an easy ending <em>-cycline<\/em>, such as tetracycline or doxycycline. These broadspectrum anti-microbial drugs are used in treating and preventing bacterial infections. <strong>Aminoglycosides<\/strong> are another antibiotic ending with <em>-mycin<\/em>, such as neomycin and tobramycin. <strong>Fluoroquinolones<\/strong> are a broadspectrum antibiotic ending with <em>-floxacin<\/em>, such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Antiviral_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Antiviral Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nWhile antibiotics treat bacterial infections, antivirals treat a virus infection. If the ending is <em>-vir<\/em>, it&#8217;s most likely an antiviral, such as acyclovir. Let&#8217;s turn our focus to some drugs that treat intestinal issues.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Antiemetic_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Antiemetic Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nDrugs ending and <em>-azine<\/em>, such as promethazine, are an antiemetic used to treat nausea and vomiting. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Antiulcer_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Anti-ulcer Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nProton pump inhibitors end with <em>-prazole<\/em>, such as lansoprazole (Prevacid) and omeprazole (Prilosec). These are anti-ulcer drugs that reduce gastric acid production. <\/p>\n<p>Another anti-ulcer drug is the H2 receptor antagonists, or H2 blockers, which block the action of histamine in the stomach, decreasing the production of stomach acid. These drugs usually end in <em>-tidine<\/em>, such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), and ranitidine (Zantac).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Common_Respiratory_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Common Respiratory Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nWe&#8217;ve included a couple of common respiratory drugs. <\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Bronchodilators\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Bronchodilators<\/h3>\n<p>\nBronchodilators dilate the bronchi and bronchioles, decreasing resistance in the airway and increasing airflow to the lungs. These medications are given for asthma and COPD and include drugs ending in <em>-terol<\/em> and <em>-phylline<\/em>, such as albuterol, levalbuterol, theophylline, and aminophylline. <\/p>\n<h3>Antihistamines<\/h2>\n<p>\nAntihistamines are given to treat allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, or hives, and include drugs ending in <em>-ine<\/em>, such as diphenhydramine, loratadine, and brompheniramine.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Depression_and_Antianxiety_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Depression and Anti-anxiety Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nMedications used to treat depression and anxiety include the following: <\/p>\n<p>Drugs ending in <em>-pam<\/em> or <em>-lam<\/em> are most likely a <strong>benzodiazepine<\/strong>, which are used to treat anxiety, and prolonged use may lead to physical dependence. Benzodiazepines include alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), and lorazepam (Ativan). <\/p>\n<p>Several <strong>tricyclic antidepressants<\/strong> end in <em>-triptyline<\/em>, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline. These drugs are used to treat depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OC, and other mood disorders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SSRIs<\/strong> (Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitors) block or delay the reabsorption of serotonin and are used to treat major depressive disorders and anxiety disorders. You&#8217;ll find that they end in <em>-pram<\/em> or <em>-ine<\/em>, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro). <\/p>\n<p>As I near the end of the list, there are a few that didn&#8217;t fall into the earlier categories. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Local_Anesthetic_Drug_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Local Anesthetic Drug Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nDrugs ending in <em>-caine<\/em> are local anesthetics, such as lidocaine and xylocaine.<\/p>\n<p>Local anesthetics prevent the transmission of nerve impulses or pain without causing unconsciousness. <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Corticosteroid_Suffixes\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>Corticosteroid Suffixes<\/h2>\n<p>\nCorticosteroids are anti-inflammatory drugs used to control many different symptoms, but not a cure for the underlying disease process.
