Hopefully these pharmacology mnemonics will help you simplify some difficult concepts.<\/p>\n<p>The first one covers general medication administration, and while it\u2019s not necessarily a mnemonic, it provides an easy way to remember the 6 rights of drug administration.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"6_%E2%80%9CR%E2%80%99s%E2%80%9D_(Rights)_of_Drug_Administration\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>6 \u201cR\u2019s\u201d (Rights) of Drug Administration<\/h2>\n<p>\nNurses are involved in the administration of medication in many various settings. It is important to prevent medication errors by knowing the 6 rights of drug administration:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>Right patient:<\/strong> Use 2 identifiers to verify right patient &#8211; check or scan the ID band for name and medical record number<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>Right medication:<\/strong> Verify that the drug name and the form of medication matches the doctor\u2019s order<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>Right dose:<\/strong> Verify order and confirm the correct dosage calculation<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>Right route:<\/strong> Check the order and confirm if it is oral, IV, SQ, IM, etc.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>Right time:<\/strong> Check the frequency and confirm the last time given<\/li>\n<li><strong>Right documentation:<\/strong> Document administration after giving medication &#8211; chart time, route, and other specifics (injection site, lab value, vital sign related to drug)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"LEAN\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>LEAN<\/h2>\n<p>\nThese are drugs that help prevent a patient from deteriorating to an arrest situation.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>L<\/strong>idocaine &#8211; antiarrhythmic (and topical\/local anesthetic): Decreases depolarization and excitability of ventricles during diastole, used for ventricular arrhythmias<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>E<\/strong>pinephrine &#8211; adrenergic agonist, catecholamine: Increases heart rate, causes vasoconstriction, and is a bronchodilator, used for anaphylactic reactions, bronchial asthma, hypersensitivity reactions<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>A<\/strong>tropine &#8211; anticholinergic, antiarrhythmic: Increases cardiac rate, decreases respiratory secretions, treats sinus bradycardia, reverses effects of anticholinesterase medication<\/li>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong>arcan &#8211; narcotic antagonist: Blocks narcotic effects, used to counteract opioid-induced respiratory depression or toxicity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"IDEA\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>IDEA<\/h2>\n<p>\nDrugs for bradycardia and hypotension:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>I<\/strong>soproterenol: Relaxes blood vessels and helps the heart pump blood more efficiently to resolve low blood pressure.\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>D<\/strong>opamine: Increases the pumping strength of the heart to resolve low blood pressure.\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>E<\/strong>pinephrine: Constricts peripheral blood vessels, which shunts blood to the central circulation and increases blood flow to the heart and brain.\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>tropine: Anticholinergic drug that blocks parasympathetic vagal stimulation. It is the drug of choice to treat symptomatic sinus bradycardia.\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"ABCDE\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>ABCDE<\/h2>\n<p>\nRemember ABCDE for atrial\/supraventricular arrhythmias.<\/p>\n<p>An arrhythmia is a change in the heart\u2019s normal rate or rhythm\u2014an atrial arrhythmia occurring in either the left or right atrium. They can range from being annoying but not dangerous to those that produce significant cardiac symptoms or loss of consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of medicines are available to restore normal heart rhythm, remember:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>A<\/strong>nticoagulants: given to prevent embolization<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>B<\/strong>eta blockers: given to block the effects of certain hormones on the heart to slow the HR<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>C<\/strong>alcium channel blockers: slow the HR, decrease the contractility of the heart, and cause smooth muscle relaxation<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><strong>D<\/strong>igoxin: slows the HR by blocking the number of electrical impulses that pass through the AV node into the ventricles<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong>lectrocardioversion: electric currents are used to reset the heart\u2019s rhythm back to a regular pattern<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"PALS\" class=\"m-toc-anchor\"><\/span>PALS<\/h2>\n<p>\nVentricular arrhythmias are abnormal rapid heart rhythms originating in the ventricles of the heart.
