Some the exams also include written questions with short essay-style answers, and other exams have spoken-response questions.

Each exam has a set time limit, generally 3 hours and 15 minutes.

ILTS Exam Registration

To register for an exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, you will need to log in and select the specific exam you wish to register for. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

The testing fee for an ILTS exam is usually between $115 and $122.

How an ILTS Exam is Scored

ILTS exams are scored using a scaled scoring system. This system takes your raw score, which is the total of how many questions you answered correctly, and converts it into a numerical score on a scale from 100 to 300. You will need a minimum score of 240 to pass the exam.

This scoring system is used because there are different versions of the exam given to each group of test-takers. Since different testers are given different questions, raw scores do not always represent fair comparisons between the different exams. Scaled scoring allows the variability in difficulty to be considered so candidates have an equal opportunity no matter what version of the exam they are given.

Retaking an ILTS Exam

If you do not pass your exam on your first attempt, you may retake the exam after completing the full registration process. There is a mandatory waiting period between attempts, which will differ depending on the exam.

Exam

Waiting Period

Content-Area Exams (except Gifted Education)

14 days

Chief School Business Official

Director of Special Education

Gifted Education

30 days

Foreign/World Language Content-Area Exams

Language Proficiency Exams

Learning Behavior Specialist Exams

Principal as Instructional Leader

60 days

Superintendent

FAQs

Q

How many ILTS exams are there?

A

There are 100 exams that cover materials that a wide range of educators must know according to the grade level they will be instructing in, and if they have a specialty subject they will teach.

Q

Can I cancel or reschedule my ILTS exam?

A

Yes, you may cancel or reschedule your test appointment, as long as you do so no later than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.

Q

How long does it take to get my ILTS score?

A

You should receive your final exams scores within 2 to 6 weeks after testing.

Q

Which ILTS exams include constructed-response questions?

A

These are the exams that contain constructed-response questions:

Target Language Proficiency exams

Foreign Language Content Area exams

Principal as Instructional Leader exam

Learning Behavior Specialist II

Superintendent

Q

What is the passing score for an ILTS exam?

A

To pass your exam, you must achieve a scaled score of at least 240.

By Eric Richter

Eric is the Product Development Manager responsible for developing and updating the Mometrix Teacher Certification and K-12 products.
