President John Tyler<\/h1>\n

John Tyler was the first vice president to become president through the death of the standing president. He was against creating a third national bank. He was part of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which helped smooth relations with England by exchanging fugitives, setting the border of Maine at the St. John river, and establishing that Britain could no longer search American ships. Tyler stayed true to his beliefs of “manifest destiny” and western expansion, and helped secure the annexation of the Republic of Texas into the U.S. Due to his non-partisan specific ways, he distanced himself from both of the major political parties of the time and did not get re-elected.<\/p>\n
