President James K. Polk<\/h1>\n

Whenever James K. Polk became President of the United States in 1844, he had to deal with a few major issues in the country. The economy was still in disrepair from the Panic of 1837, abolitionism was gaining supporters, and manifest destiny was gaining popularity. During Polk’s presidency, he lowered the tariff on foreign goods from 35% to 25%. He reimplemented the Independent Treasury System. He continued westward expansion, gaining Texas and, due to America’s victory over Mexico, most of the present day southwest America. He promised to only one term, and kept that promise. Though he only served one term, he had a very successful term as President, accomplishing most of his goals during his presidency.<\/p>\n
