Millions of students from around the world suffer from test anxiety. It’s very commonplace, so don’t feel alone.

There are 3 ways that test anxiety can impact you. First: Physical. Second: Emotional. Lastly: Cognitive. Let’s take a look at these to see how you’re being impacted. First, physically. Usually, the physical symptoms of test anxiety are the easiest to recognize. They have a broad range and you may experience one or many of them.

Each person is a little different when it comes to how your body deals with stress. Here are the most common symptoms: Faintness, sweating, headache, dry mouth, fast heartbeat, tense muscles, trouble breathing, extreme body temperature changes, nausea or diarrhea, and cramps. Test anxiety doesn’t just impact you physically. It can also impact you emotionally.

Sometimes we forget how stress can impact us emotionally, because we’re either too busy to notice or too distracted by the physical effects. Unfortunately, the emotional symptoms of test anxiety can effect us just as much, if not more, than the physical ones. For example, many people experience the following: Excessive fear, disappointment, depression, anger, uncontrollable crying or laughing, feelings of helplessness, hypernegativity, and negative self-talk.

These symptoms can impact the way that we live, spend time with others, and even how we perceive ourselves. Lastly, there can be a cognitive impact. Although the other symptoms of test anxiety are significant, this third group can have more long-term effects on your life, as they can prevent you from doing well on your test and therefore prevent you form getting the certificate, job, graduation, etc. that you need to be successful in life.

Although some of these symptoms might sound like normal problems, they can become increasingly deblilitating during an exam or test, which is why it’s important to diagnose your test anxiety as soon as possible so you can put an end to it as soon as possible.
